Completed in 2014, the 32,000 sf Lawrence A. Griffin Center for Creativity brings Shore Country Day School’s arts and innovation programs together in a shared campus hub. Positioned between the Lower and Upper Schools, the center bridges a former physical and functional divide and gives students, faculty, families, and visitors a place to meet, make, perform, and learn across disciplines.
A 375-seat, multi-level theater forms the center of the building. Its curved volume meets the rectilinear exterior to shape a central kiva with flexible seating, multimedia resources, and views into the surrounding spaces. Art and music rooms, studios, classrooms, an innovation lab, and administrative areas support visual and performing arts as well as collaborative projects such as boatbuilding.
An entry tower with a signature red roof marks the school’s arrival point and organizes pedestrian connections across campus. Natural light reaches 75 percent of the interior, while a high-performance envelope, water-saving fixtures, low-VOC finishes, and renewable or recycled materials help the building perform 20 percent better than energy code. The roof can also accommodate future solar panels and a green roof.
