The Humane Society of Rome New Animal Shelter will replace the organization’s aging facility at 6247 Lamphear Road in Rome, New York. Planned as a 20,000 sf, single-story building on an 18-parcel site, the shelter separates public community spaces from secure medical and animal care areas to support clear circulation, disease control, and acoustic comfort.
The public wing includes an open adoption hub, pet retail space, and flexible community room for veteran support programs and educational reading initiatives. Controlled access connects this area to a medical and care wing with a high-volume spay-and-neuter surgery center, dedicated isolation suites, and a cruelty investigation office. The design follows current New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets regulations for companion animal care.
Dedicated HVAC zones provide independent airflow and higher air-exchange rates within the isolation areas, helping control odors and reduce cross-contamination. Durable, nonporous finishes withstand frequent chemical cleaning while helping limit noise. Construction will be phased so the existing shelter can remain open until the new building is commissioned. The original facility will then be removed to make way for the final hardscape and outdoor animal enrichment runs.
