This Marblehead beachfront residence transforms a series of Colonial Revival renovations into a cohesive contemporary coastal home. Drawing on the Arts & Crafts influence of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House, the design reinterprets familiar New England forms through a more refined, modern language.

Simplified rooflines, nickel-gap siding, expansive glazing, and a new two-story gabled entry give the exterior a clear architectural identity. Mahogany accents add warmth and help break down the home's linear form, while a stainless steel brise soleil moderates southern light and creates shifting patterns across the façade.

Inside, natural materials establish distinct atmospheres throughout the home. Lunawood ceilings bring warmth to the dining room and primary bedroom, while the bourbon room combines Shou Sugi Ban, walnut millwork, smart glass, backlighting, and a copper penny floor. Large folding and sliding doors connect the main living spaces to the patio and ocean beyond, and the home opens and closes with the seasons.

The finished residence is grounded and contemporary at once, closely tied to its coastal site and shaped, throughout, by the clients' own ideas.

The home is deeply connected to its coastal setting.

“When the patio doors are wide open, one can hear and feel the ocean waves rolling in and lapping—or, at times, crashing against the rocks along the beach.”
