In 1990, the Boston Globe reports that John Olson is designing three resort hotels in Egypt. On the Red Sea coast at Hurghada: the Garden City Hotel, a 300-room luxury resort for the Red Sea Co., and a Sonesta hotel and resort, a new 200-room building alongside the redesign of a 200-room hotel already under construction. On the Sinai Peninsula at Sharm El Sheikh: Palma de Sharm, a master plan and 150-room luxury resort set in a marine sanctuary known for its beaches, fishing, and diving. The Sonesta commission carries the firm's founding relationship with the Sonnabend family across the Atlantic, ten years into the practice.
